Artificial grass fall damping prevents serious injury

The right subbase/fall protection under playground equipment prevents children from sustaining serious injuries after a fall. The safety of a subbase is determined, among other things, by the maximum fall height, measured using the HIC value (Head Injury Criterion). The maximum fall height of playground equipment is the height up to which a fall is still considered acceptable.

Up to heights of 60 centimeters, no specific fall damping is necessary. For fall heights up to a maximum of 1 meter, natural grass or another non-certified subbase is also sufficient. However, for playground equipment with a fall height of 1 meter or more, certified (artificial grass) fall damping is necessary to adequately absorb the fall and prevent serious injury.

Fall-dampening artificial grass under playground equipment higher than 1 meter

Do you have playground equipment higher than 1 meter and would you like to use artificial grass? Then our advice is to combine playgrass with a fall-dampening underlay. Place this under the relevant playground equipment or under the entire artificial grass surface of the play area. This way, children can continue to play as they are used to, but the risks of injury from a fall decrease.

A Safepad is applied to a sand foundation of approximately 20 cm. This subbase, in combination with the special Playgrass 24 artificial grass top layer, ensures good drainage, excellent stability, and the desired fall damping. After installation, the artificial grass is filled with quartz sand (approx. 25 kg/m²) for a durable and wear-resistant subbase.
