Most artificial grass manufacturers will respond that artificial grass does not directly ignite but rather melts. It is made of high-quality synthetic material. Furthermore, if artificial grass is filled with infill sand, this also acts as a fire retardant.

For outdoor use, for example in gardens, artificial grass is therefore very safe. However, specific situations, particularly indoors or at highly attended events, require stricter fire safety standards. In such cases, it is essential to rely not only on general properties but on independent tests and certifications.

Fire Safety Requirements and the Euroclass System

To determine how building materials react to fire, a standardized method for testing and classification has been established: the Euroclass system (European standard UNE EN 13501-1).

Most types of artificial grass receive an EFL rating in this test. This means that in an indoor fire, where temperatures can rise much higher than outdoors, artificial grass is considered a combustible material and can contribute significantly to a fire. Although an EFL rating is more than sufficient and safe for outdoor use, a higher classification is required for indoor use and in public spaces or at events. Here, a CFL rating is expected, which means that the material may only contribute very limitedly to a fire.
