Artificial grass has been gaining popularity in recent years as an alternative to natural grass. It requires less maintenance and watering and can withstand heavy use. However, there are some concerns about the fire safety of artificial grass. Is artificial grass flammable? What are the risks associated with artificial grass fires? In this article, we will answer these questions and more.
Flammability of Artificial Grass for Indoor and Outdoor Spaces In principle, artificial grass is not flammable. It is made of high-quality synthetic material that does not burn, but can melt. Moreover, if artificial grass is filled with infill sand, it also has fire-resistant and fire-retardant properties. Before we go into the technical aspect of flammability, we can state that artificial grass is not flammable. For outdoor use, artificial grass is therefore very safe, but some situations require more than that.
We are talking about the use at events and in public spaces, where stricter requirements always apply for fire safety. In these cases, you cannot just rely on the manufacturer, but an independent test is needed to determine whether artificial grass is flammable and has fire-resistant or fire-retardant properties.
To determine how materials in a home react to fire, a method has been established to test and classify the material. This is better known as the Euroclass system and is the European standard UNE EN 13501-1. Most types of artificial grass receive an EFL rating in this test. This means that in the event of an indoor fire, artificial grass is a flammable material and can make a significant contribution to a fire.
However, this test is intended for materials used indoors, where temperatures can rise much higher than outside. For outdoor use, an EFL rating is more than sufficient and very safe. For indoor use and use in public spaces or events, a CFL rating is required. This means that the material may have a very limited contribution to a fire.
In some environments, however, strict fire safety controls may be required, such as when specifying artificial grass for use at events, offices, or other public indoor spaces. The Euroclass system UNE EN 13501-1 measures both flame spread and smoke production.
Until recently, there was no artificial grass that met both requirements and still offered a natural and realistic appearance. But that has changed with the arrival of Fireproof Grass. Our fireproof grass is certified with a CFL-s1 certificate.
CFL-s1 indicates that a product is both flame-retardant (CFL: a flammable material that makes a limited contribution to a fire) and Fireproof Grass is a high-quality product suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, has a long lifespan, and has fire-retardant qualities.
Benefits of Fireproof Grass, artificial grass with a fire certificate:
The rolls of Fireproof Grass are 200 to 400 cm wide and have a maximum length of 25 m (Fira 20) or 30 m (Expo 20). The pile height is 20 mm and it has a maximum height of 22 mm. The rolls are tufted and have a division of 3/8 "with a stitch count of 13 (Expo 20) or 14 (Fira 20). The Expo 20 is made of Polyethylene & Polypropylene and the Fira 20 of Polyamide. The Expo 20 is specifically focused on landscaping while the Fira 20 is excellent for events. Both rolls require 3 kilos of infill sand per square meter.
